Designer Profile and Collection Overview

Emily Satloff

Founder and designer of the Larkspur & Hawk collection, Emily Satloff combines her eye for 18th and 19th century jewelry with a modern-day design philosophy. Based in New York City, and following a graduate degree in the History of Decorative Arts, Emily began her career as a curator at The New-York Historical Society and a consultant at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She has been one of the country’s most acclaimed antique jewelry dealers for over a decade, and her academic approach and extensive experience in fine antiques affords Emily the ideal platform to launch her own collection of unique fine jewelry that is aesthetically modern, yet rooted in the celebrated techniques of centuries past.

Foil Collection
Emily draws her inspiration for the Larkspur & Hawk collection from European and American fine jewelry of the Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods. She has skillfully reintroduced the 18th century craft of manipulating the way light passes through gemstones through the use of colored foils – a technique that was favored by European royalty for its dramatic results.  Emily selects the perfect stones that are both brilliant in color and translucent in depth, including: pink amethyst, blue topaz, citrine, rose quartz, white topaz, and diamonds.

Once the gemstone is selected, she selects and tests various colored foils, selecting the optimal hue to enhance each stone’s inherent radiance.  Settings are crafted in various golds or in oxidized silver and and incorporate an attention to detail and authenticity afforded by Emily’s personal experience as a curator of antique jewelry. The Anne earring is modeled after the English Queen Anne’s own earring. The Sophia and Grace rings also draw inspiration from British influence while the Isabella ring is reminiscent of Spanish nobility.  Additional lines are reminiscent of other periods and regional inspiration.

Such is Life Collection
Larkspur & Hawk’s most recent collection celebrates the centuries-old tradition of expressing heartfelt sentiment through jewelry. The common and often irreverent words of the 18th century find a new, modern voice in Such is Life.  This motto, as well as others drawn from the 18th century, adorns a selection of rings and bracelets - all handcrafted using traditional goldsmithing techniques.  The traditional combination of enamel and diamonds is brilliantly updated with violet-hued enamel enhanced by tiny pink diamonds or periwinkle enamel with bright white diamonds, as an example.

Images of pieces from both collections are shown on the cards in this set.  These cards represent only a portion of the entire collection, and other combinations of stones, foils (where applicable), and metals are offered.
